on one end of the scale you have people saying to avoid it like the plague. on the other end people are saying ” only processed sugar is bad ” while slurping down a fruit smoothie labelled as ” healthy ” or ” Natural ” when in fact the smoothie contain more sugar than a bottle of coke.
But it is really not as simple as that.
The fact of the matter is sugar is bad for our health but when it comes to what the best choice is we need to look at the glycemic index. The glycemic index measures how fast carbohydrates( sugars) affect blood glucose levels. The higher the ranking the faster it enters our blood stream and the more damage it can cause.
Fast carbohydrates cause sugar spikes leading to a rapid burst of energy for up to 2 hours followed by a slump( sugar low) when all you want to do is go for a nap. Along with this, sugar causes insulin resistance leading to weight gain and eventually can develop into type 2 diabetes. The glycemic index is just a guideline and there are many other important factors that affect our blood glucose levels.
