It began decades ago when a study examined heart risk based on lifestyle and dietary habits. It found that in the countries where people ate more fat—especially saturated fat—there were more cases of heart disease, and concluded that the fat caused the disease. But here’s the problem with this study. correlation is not causation.
I could write a million words on fat but here are some of the top reasons as to why fat is good for us:
1-Fats build healthy cells. Fat builds healthy cell membranes. Healthy cell membranes allow cells to function more efficiently. Healthy cells, Healthy body.
2-Fats help the body use vitamins. Vitmeins A, D, E and K are fat soluble meaning the fat in foods help the intestines absorb these vitamins.
3-Fats have a major role in the production of hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. These hormones are critical for male and female development especially as teenagers.
4-Fat provides healthier skin. since the membrane is what influences the cells ability to hold water, having a nice, healthy barrier yields moister, softer, and wrinkle-free skin.
When consuming fat we have to be careful to separate the good from the bad. Butter, tallow, lard, palm oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil are all good sources of natural fats. Canola, soybean, sunflower, corn, safflower, grapeseed, margarine are all sources of factory made unhealthy fats.
I also recommend to know your portion sizes as fat is calorific(9 calories per gram)and easy to overdo if you don’t know how much you are consuming.
